Estha and Rahel also of The God of Small Things
Day Twenty-Eight: A non-white male fic rec
pass
Day Twenty-Nine: A non-white female fic rec
pass
Day Thirty: Anything you like
Anything I like? How 'bout 20 things I like and 1 thing I hate?
Well, these are random characters, books, stories, plays, authors, and poets that I like:
1. The God of Small Things by Arundati Roy
2. Hullabaloo in the Guava Orchard by Kiran Desai
3. Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai
4. Cambridge by Caryl Phillips
5. Anything by Sandra Cisneros, but especially Woman Hollering Creek
6. Rita Dove's poetry, especially "Cameos"
7. Character: Salim from Slumdog Millionaire, because while that movie had more issues than you can shake a stick at, Salim was amazing. That character was perfect.
8. Movie: Salaam Bombay; Character: Krishna--he'll break your heart.
9. Movie (Documentary): Born into Brothels
10. The Earth, Fire, Water trilogy by director Deepa Mehta
11. Ficciones by Jorge Luis Borges
12. Grass Soup by Zhang Xianliang
13. Kiss of the Spider Woman by Manuel Puig
14. Lucy by Jamaica Kincaid
15. The Flying Dutchman by Amari Baraka
16. Junot Diaz--Drown and The Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao
17. Bed by Tao Lin
18. Almost anything by Dagoberto Gilb
19. Mrs. Kim/Lane's relationship in Gilmore Girls--they never fail to crack open my cold, black heart.
20. Midnight's Children by Salman Rushdie.
One thing I de-recommend:
The Bone People by Keri Hulme. This is maybe the worst book I've ever slogged through 600 pages for. It's a mess. About Maoris. A Maori mess.
